With Real Madrid in the semifinals of the Club World Cup, the performances from youngster Gonzalo García could be the reason they go all the way.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- A Real Madrid star is stealing the show at the FIFA Club World Cup, just as FIFA would have wanted, but nobody would have expected Gonzalo García to be driving Los Blancos to glory in the United States.Kylian Mbappé's spectacular scissor kick goal in stoppage time in Saturday's 3-2 quarterfinal win against Borussia Dortmund will lead the Play of the Day clips, but Mbappé's goal gave Real Madrid a two-goal lead.At the start of the tournament last month, if a Real forward was picked to win the Golden Boot, the leading candidates would have been Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, or even attacking midfielder Jude Bellingham.Over the past 30 to 40 years, many young goal scorers have threatened to break through at Real, but their paths have been blocked by some of the game's biggest stars, such as Ronaldo Nazario, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Michael Owen, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Real Madrid edged past Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in a dramatic Club World Cup quarter-final on Saturday to set up a semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain
Real Madrid have set up a date with Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semi-final, despite a chaotic last 10 minutes, giving Kylian Mbappé a chance to face his former side on a big stage after he scored a fantastic acrobatic goal in a 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund. That incredible conclusion to an otherwise pedestrian match also included a late red card given to Real Madrid’s Dean Huijsen, the impressive new arrival in central defence, who will miss the semi-final as a result of bringing down Serhou Guirassy right after Mbappé’s stupendous volley for Real Madrid’s third.Real Madrid dominated most of the game, with Gonzalo García opening the scoring for his impressive fourth goal of the tournament and the left-back Fran García (no relation) adding the second – his first goal in 52 appearances this season. But while the final stages may be the most memorable period of this game for any of the 76,611 who filled MetLife stadium to 93% of its listed capacity, it was the Garcías’ contributions and Real Madrid’s general play through the preceding 90 minutes that most represented what the Spanish giants might look like in the coming season under Alonso.

Zubimendi, who turned down Liverpool last summer, has joined on a five-year deal. The Spain international was heavily linked with Real Madrid in recent weeks despite being understood in March to have a pre-agreement to join Arsenal.
Their attempts to sign him last summer alongside Mikel Merino – who left Real Sociedad for about £32m – are understood to have been rejected because the Spanish side did not want to lose both players in the same transfer window.Arsenal were able to secure a pre-agreement in March after continuing talks. The fee is believed to be slightly more than his release clause of £51m after they fought off late interest from Madrid, whose new manager, Xabi Alonso, coached Zubimendi for Real Sociedad’s B side.Arsenal are believed to have been searching for midfield replacements since last summer, with Zubimendi emerging as their preferred option thanks to his impressive displays for Real Sociedad and Spain.Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting after agreeing personal terms with the Sweden striker
